HEIC has been Apple's default camera format on iPhone and iPad since iOS 11 (2017). It stores photos in a HEIF container compressed with the HEVC (H.265) codec, producing files roughly 40–50% smaller than an equivalent-quality JPEG while supporting 10-bit colour, HDR, Live Photos and depth maps.
