About WPS to HEIC conversion
WPS is a file extension shared by two distinct word-processor formats: Microsoft Works (.wps, 1987-2009, discontinued) and Kingsoft Writer / WPS Office (.wps, still actively developed, dominant in China). Microsoft Works WPS files originate from a low-cost office suite Microsoft bundled with consumer PCs throughout the 1990s and 2000s, sold as the cheaper alternative to Office. Kingsoft WPS files come from the cross-platform office suite developed in China since 1988 and now used by 500+ million users globally, particularly across Chinese government, education, and corporate sectors.
Converting WPS to HEIC renders each page of the document at the page's set size - typically Letter or A4 - and encodes it as a compact HEIC image, roughly half the bytes of a JPG render at the same legibility. Microsoft Works WPS files (versions 6-9) open in LibreOffice Writer directly via the libwps importer. Kingsoft Writer WPS files are essentially Microsoft Word .doc files with a different extension - Kingsoft has tracked Word's binary format closely since 2005 and the conversion path is identical to DOC-to-HEIC. The converter detects the file type by inspecting the header bytes and routes through the correct importer automatically.
Audiences differ sharply: Microsoft Works WPS conversion is mostly archive migration - users digging through old family PCs from 2002-2008 with recipes, school papers, and tax records saved by Mom in Works, now being preserved as space-efficient images in Apple Photos or iCloud. Kingsoft WPS conversion is current production work - documents received from mainland Chinese partners that need to be viewed on iPhones and Macs without installing WPS Office. Remember HEIC's compatibility profile: native on Apple devices since 2017, codec-dependent on Windows - use HEIC to JPG on the output when recipients are on PCs.
Where HEIC comes from
The .wps extension has two distinct lineages. Microsoft Works, launched in 1987, was Microsoft's budget productivity suite bundled with home and education PCs through the 1990s and 2000s - it used .wps for its word-processor documents and was discontinued in 2010. Separately, Kingsoft Office (renamed WPS Office in 2014, by China-based Kingsoft Corporation) reuses the .wps extension for its own format though most modern WPS Office output is DOCX. Today, encountering a .wps file usually means rescuing a legacy Works document from a family PC or school archive - and HEIC is the natural landing place when the family album now lives in iCloud Photos.
WPS vs HEIC at a glance
| WPS | HEIC | |
|---|---|---|
| File format | .wps (Microsoft Works or Kingsoft WPS) | .heic (HEVC-compressed raster image) |
| Origin | Two distinct apps share the extension | Single ISO-standardized HEIF container |
| Editability | MS Works (discontinued 2010) or Kingsoft WPS Office | Read-only |
| Recipient platform | Niche - Works archive holders or WPS Office users | Every Apple device natively; HEVC codec on Windows |
| Use case | Home / school documents from 1990s-2000s | Compact visual archive shareable across the family's iPhones |
Real-world workflow — Genealogy hobbyist rescuing family-history documents for iPhone-carrying relatives
- Recover 380 .wps files from a Compaq Presario hard drive containing a grandparent's life story
- Microsoft Works has been discontinued since 2010; modern Word opens only some files
- Convert the entire batch of .wps files to HEIC at 250 DPI to preserve the original styling in a compact modern format
- Share the pages through an iCloud shared album, where cousins on iPhones and iPads browse the memoir natively
- Keep JPG exports on hand for the two relatives on Android, and print a photo-book from the high-DPI renders

When to convert WPS to HEIC
Converting WPS to HEIC renders each page or slide as a fixed image - The layout, fonts, tables, and graphics captured exactly as they appear, in a format roughly half the size of the equivalent JPG render. The result is a read-only visual snapshot that cannot be edited, reflowed, or accidentally modified by the recipient's software.
This suits Apple-device reference workflows: page images of contracts, reports, slides, and drawings stored as HEIC open instantly in Quick Look, Photos, and Files on Mac, iPhone, and iPad, and occupy minimal iCloud space even for long documents. No office software or WPS viewer is needed at any point after conversion.
Because HEIC support is thin outside the Apple ecosystem, use this conversion when the images are for your own devices or an Apple-based team. When page snapshots need to travel to unknown recipients, Windows systems, or web uploads, converting the document to JPG produces the universally compatible equivalent.
WPS to HEIC tips
- Check the file size first - Microsoft Works WPS files are usually 10-50KB for short documents while Kingsoft WPS files run 30-500KB; this is a quick heuristic for which lineage you have.
- LibreOffice Writer opens both Microsoft Works WPS and Kingsoft Writer WPS files directly via File > Open on Mac, Windows, and Linux.
- Kingsoft offers free WPS Office for Windows, Mac, Linux, iOS, and Android at wps.com - if you regularly receive .wps files, install it for native handling.
- Microsoft discontinued Works in 2009 - newer .wps files almost certainly come from Kingsoft Writer rather than the legacy Microsoft format.
- For Chinese-language documents check that fonts (SimSun, SimHei, Microsoft YaHei) are available on the conversion server - this converter ships with the standard CJK font set.
