About PSD to HEIC conversion
PSD (Photoshop Document) is Adobe Photoshop's native project format. PSD files can contain dozens of layers, adjustment layers, smart objects, masks, and other Photoshop-specific data. When converting PSD to HEIC, all layers are flattened into a single composite image before HEVC compression is applied - And because HEIC supports an alpha channel, any transparency in the composition can be preserved rather than flattened to white.
Converting PSD to HEIC suits Apple-centric delivery: edit in Photoshop with full layer flexibility, then export a compressed, storage-efficient snapshot for an Apple Photos library, iOS asset pipeline, or iCloud archive. The HEIC is roughly half the size an equivalent-quality JPG export would be. For web delivery or mixed-platform clients, JPG or PNG remains the safer target since HEIC will not display in browsers.
Where HEIC comes from
PSD (Photoshop Document) shipped with Photoshop 1.0 in February 1990, written by brothers Thomas and John Knoll. Adobe acquired the tool that same year and PSD quickly became the agency-standard layered-image format. Across 30+ versions Adobe has extended PSD to carry vector layers, smart objects, video frames, 3D objects, adjustment layers, layer comps, slices and HDR data — far beyond a simple raster container. Although PSD is proprietary, Adobe has published parts of the specification, allowing Affinity Photo, GIMP, Krita, Pixelmator and web converters to read PSDs — and flattening one into HEIC produces an Apple-native deliverable at roughly half the size of an equivalent JPEG.
PSD vs HEIC at a glance

| Transparency | Full alpha plus layer masks | Full alpha channel (flattened) |
| Typical file size (12 MP image) | 30-100 MB | 1.5-2.5 MB |
| Best for | Photoshop editing | Apple devices, storage savings |
| Animation | Yes (frame timeline) | Yes (image sequence) |
| Bit depth | 8, 16 or 32-bit per channel | 8 or 10-bit |
| Browser support | None | Safari only |
Real-world workflow — Agency delivers the approved hero to an iPad-based client
- Art director approves the PSD comp with 40 layers
- Convert PSD to HEIC, flattening all groups and adjustment layers into a 2 MB file
- AirDrop the HEIC to the client's iPad, where Photos renders it natively
- Keep the PSD in the agency DAM for future variants

When to convert PSD to HEIC
Converting PSD to HEIC is a common workflow requirement wherever different software systems, platforms, and applications need to exchange image or document content. Whether you are preparing files for web publishing, print production, client delivery, or meeting upload requirements, having the right format is the starting point for every distribution workflow.
PSD files are tied to specific software ecosystems and tools. When that content needs to move into a context that requires HEIC - A different editing environment, a submission portal, a print service, or a sharing platform - A fast, reliable converter removes the format barrier without requiring software installation or technical knowledge.
heic.now processes your file securely in the cloud and returns a clean HEIC output that meets the format specification of standard applications and platforms. Files are processed privately and automatically deleted after 24 hours - Nothing is stored beyond what is needed to complete your conversion.
PSD to HEIC tips
- Keep the original PSD file - Once flattened to HEIC, the individual layers are permanently merged and cannot be recovered.
- Use quality 88–92% for professional PSD-to-HEIC exports to preserve retouching and colour grading work.
- If your PSD uses a wide-gamut colour profile (ProPhoto, Adobe RGB), HEIC's 10-bit and Display P3 support handles wide gamuts far better than an 8-bit sRGB JPG - But still check the output colours if colour accuracy is critical.
