About PSB to HEIC conversion
PSB (Photoshop Large Document) is Adobe's extended version of the PSD format, designed for canvases that exceed PSD's 30,000 x 30,000 pixel and 2GB limits. Introduced in Photoshop CS (2003), PSB supports up to 300,000 x 300,000 pixels and a theoretical 4 exabyte file size, making it the working format for billboard-resolution prints, gigapixel panoramic stitches, IMAX matte paintings, digital painters at 60,000 pixels for highly-detailed concept art, satellite imagery composites, and AI-upscaled hero canvases that routinely cross the 2GB threshold.
Converting PSB to HEIC flattens the document and encodes the result as a HEIC image - and here HEIC's efficiency really pays off, since HEVC compression typically lands 40-50% smaller than an equivalent-quality JPEG on gigantic canvases where every percentage point is hundreds of megabytes. HEIC handles huge dimensions by tiling the image into an internal grid (the same mechanism iPhone uses), but many viewers still struggle above roughly 100 megapixels, and HEIC's 10-bit encoding preserves the smooth gradients of matte paintings that 8-bit JPEG would band. For practical sharing, downsize during conversion - 8000 pixels on the long edge is enough for most billboard and large-print review workflows.
Matte painters at ILM, Weta FX, and DNEG; concept artists working on Marvel and Disney productions; medical imaging specialists handling whole-slide pathology scans; cartographers stitching satellite tiles; and large-format printer operators are the typical PSB audiences. Most ship final deliverables as flattened TIFF or a downsized review image because few applications outside Photoshop and Affinity Photo handle PSB natively. For non-massive canvases use PSD-to-HEIC instead. PSB files can take minutes to load even on M2 Ultra workstations with 64GB RAM, so be patient.
Where HEIC comes from
Adobe introduced the .psb (PSD Big) format with Photoshop CS in 2003 to break the 2 GB / 30,000-pixel-per-side limit of the original PSD format that had stood since 1990. PSB extends every field that PSD constrained to 32 bits, lifting the canvas ceiling to 300,000 x 300,000 pixels and removing the file-size cap. It became indispensable for VFX matte painting, gigapixel composites, panorama stitching, satellite imagery work, and large-format print. HEIC makes an unusually good preview target for PSB: its HEVC encoder supports 10-bit color, so the smooth gradients that dominate matte work survive with less banding than an 8-bit JPG - in a file roughly half the size.
PSB vs HEIC at a glance
| PSB | HEIC | |
|---|---|---|
| File format | .psb (Photoshop Large Document) | .heic (flat HEVC-compressed raster) |
| Canvas size | Up to 300,000 x 300,000 pixels | Downscale to HEVC-friendly dimensions (8K-16K tiles practical) |
| Layers | Full Photoshop layer stack, smart objects, masks | Flattened to single image |
| Bit depth | 8/16/32-bit channels | Up to 10-bit color - retains more gradient detail than 8-bit JPG |
| File size | Often 4-60 GB | Typically 3-100 MB - roughly half the equivalent JPG |
Real-world workflow — Matte painter sending environment previews to a director who reviews on an iPad Pro
- Finalize a 32,000 x 14,400 pixel sci-fi matte painting in Photoshop, saved as an 18 GB .psb file
- The director reviews everything on an iPad Pro between sets and will not open multi-gigabyte layered files
- Convert the .psb to HEIC at quality 92, output dimensions 8000 x 3600 - the 10-bit HEVC encode preserves the sky gradients that 8-bit JPG would band
- AirDrop the HEIC to the director's iPad, where it opens instantly in Photos for pinch-zoom review and markup
- Once approved, push the original .psb to the renderfarm for full-resolution comp

When to convert PSB to HEIC
Converting PSB to HEIC is a common workflow requirement wherever different software systems, platforms, and applications need to exchange image or document content. Whether you are preparing files for web publishing, print production, client delivery, or meeting upload requirements, having the right format is the starting point for every distribution workflow.
PSB files are tied to specific software ecosystems and tools. When that content needs to move into a context that requires HEIC - A different editing environment, a submission portal, a print service, or a sharing platform - A fast, reliable converter removes the format barrier without requiring software installation or technical knowledge.
heic.now processes your file securely in the cloud and returns a clean HEIC output that meets the format specification of standard applications and platforms. Files are processed privately and automatically deleted after 24 hours - Nothing is stored beyond what is needed to complete your conversion.
PSB to HEIC tips
- Check the canvas size before converting - a 100,000 pixel PSB produces an image few viewers can open regardless of format; downsize during export to 8000-16000 pixels for practical sharing.
- PSB files routinely exceed 4GB and can take 10-30 minutes to load even on fast SSDs; allow conversion time accordingly.
- For Affinity Photo (Mac/Win/iPad) PSB support is read-only - convert to PSD via Photoshop first if you need editable handoff.
- Strip unused layers and merged channels in Photoshop before converting to dramatically speed up flattening on huge canvases.
- Sending review images to a director's iPad? HEIC is ideal - native display, 10-bit gradients intact, and half the download size of JPEG. Sending to a Windows-based print shop? Convert the result via HEIC to JPG first.
