WordPerfect Document (.wpd) is the native format of Corel WordPerfect, the word processor that dominated the legal and government sectors from the late 1980s through the mid-1990s before losing share to Microsoft Word. Despite the market decline, WordPerfect remains entrenched in US law firms (PCLaw integration, Reveal Codes for clause-level editing), Canadian federal government workflows, and certain academic publishing pipelines where the format's typography control and footnote handling are still preferred. Current versions are WordPerfect Office X9 (Windows-only) and Home & Student editions.

Converting WPD to HEIC renders each page of the document at the page's set size and DPI - typically Letter (8.5x11in) for US legal documents or A4 for international - and encodes it as a HEIC image roughly half the size of a JPG equivalent, a meaningful saving when digitizing decades of case files page by page. WordPerfect's distinctive features (Reveal Codes markup, automatic paragraph numbering, table of authorities, legal pleading paper with line numbers, footnotes with two-line separators) all render as they would in WordPerfect's print preview. Embedded WP-format graphics and equations also render correctly via LibreOffice's WordPerfect importer, which has been stable since 2009.

Litigation paralegals digitizing old case files onto iPads, government records managers migrating WordPerfect 5.1 archives from the 1990s into compact image stores, and academic editors handling manuscripts from authors who still use WordPerfect 9 are the typical audiences. Note that HEIC output opens natively on Apple devices but needs the HEVC extensions on Windows - for a law office running Windows desktops, convert the results via HEIC to JPG before circulating. For editable handoff to Word use WordPerfect's File > Save As > .docx (if you have Corel WordPerfect Office installed). For Mac users WordPerfect has had no native client since version 3.5e in 1997 - LibreOffice Writer reads .wpd directly on Mac and Linux, or use this converter for read-only preview.

WordPerfect, originally developed by Bruce Bastian and Alan Ashton at Brigham Young University, was released commercially in 1980 by Satellite Software International (renamed WordPerfect Corp). Throughout the 1980s and early 1990s, WordPerfect 5.1 for DOS dominated the legal industry thanks to its Reveal Codes feature, precise formatting, and macro engine - by 1991 it held nearly half the word-processor market. Microsoft Word overtook it in the mid-1990s after WordPerfect Corp. botched the Windows transition. Corel acquired the product in 1996 and still ships WordPerfect Office today. For firms digitizing decades of .wpd pleadings, HEIC's 40-50% size advantage over JPEG adds up fast at archive scale.

  1. Inherit a banker's box of 4,400 .wpd documents from a retiring partner's old case archive
  2. Modern Word opens about 80% of them but reflow ruins line-numbered pleadings
  3. Convert the whole archive to HEIC at 300 DPI to preserve original legal pagination and Bates numbering - at 4,400 documents, HEVC compression halves the storage bill versus JPG
  4. Catalog the HEIC renders in the firm's document management system alongside the original .wpd
  5. Attorneys review authentic-looking pleadings on their iPads; JPG/PDF copies are generated on demand for opposing counsel

Converting WPD to HEIC renders each page or slide as a fixed image - The layout, fonts, tables, and graphics captured exactly as they appear, in a format roughly half the size of the equivalent JPG render. The result is a read-only visual snapshot that cannot be edited, reflowed, or accidentally modified by the recipient's software.

This suits Apple-device reference workflows: page images of contracts, reports, slides, and drawings stored as HEIC open instantly in Quick Look, Photos, and Files on Mac, iPhone, and iPad, and occupy minimal iCloud space even for long documents. No office software or WPD viewer is needed at any point after conversion.

Because HEIC support is thin outside the Apple ecosystem, use this conversion when the images are for your own devices or an Apple-based team. When page snapshots need to travel to unknown recipients, Windows systems, or web uploads, converting the document to JPG produces the universally compatible equivalent.

  • LibreOffice Writer opens .wpd files directly on Mac, Windows, and Linux - File > Open and select the file, no conversion plugin needed.
  • For US legal documents with pleading paper line numbers, the line numbers render correctly through this converter because LibreOffice's WP importer handles them.
  • WordPerfect 5.1 (DOS-era) files from the early 1990s sometimes have encoding quirks - run them through WordPerfect Office X9 first if available, then convert.
  • Footnotes render at the bottom of their respective page in the output, matching WordPerfect's print layout exactly.
  • Reviewing converted pages on an iPad or iPhone? HEIC displays natively in Photos and Files - no extra app needed, and the archive takes about half the space of JPGs.

Yes - Corel WordPerfect Office X9 (Windows-only) is the current version as of 2024, with Standard, Pro, and Home & Student editions. It retains the classic Reveal Codes feature, table of authorities, legal pleading paper, and macros that the US legal sector relies on. There has been no Mac version since WordPerfect 3.5e shipped in 1997. Read more: What Image Formats Does heic.now Support?

Yes - LibreOffice Writer reads WordPerfect 4.2 through WordPerfect 12 directly via the libwpd library, which has been stable since 2009. Open via File > Open on any platform (Mac, Windows, Linux). The importer handles most formatting including footnotes, headers, footers, tables, and embedded images, though some advanced macros may not survive. Three reasons: Reveal Codes (the unique feature showing every formatting marker inline, useful for hunting stray formatting in 200-page contracts), table of authorities automation, and pleading paper templates with automatic line numbering required by many US courts. Migrating away requires significant retraining and template rebuilding. Read more: What Image Formats Does heic.now Support?

Yes - either open in WordPerfect Office X9 (Windows) and File > Save As to .docx, or open in LibreOffice Writer on any platform and File > Save As to .docx. Round-trip fidelity is good for plain text and basic formatting, with some loss on advanced features like cross-references and complex macros. Read more: What Image Formats Does heic.now Support?

Only if the HEVC Video Extensions are installed from the Microsoft Store - many corporate Windows images don't include them. HEIC is the right choice when the pages are headed to Apple devices or a space-conscious archive; for Windows-desktop law offices, run the output through HEIC to JPG so every workstation can open the files.
