About DWG to HEIC conversion
DWG (Drawing) is Autodesk's native binary format for AutoCAD, dating back to 1982 and remaining the lingua franca of architecture, MEP engineering, structural drafting, and civil design. Every release of AutoCAD, AutoCAD LT, Civil 3D, Revit (via export), and BricsCAD writes DWG, and the format version is tied to release year. Architects coordinate with structural engineers via DWG, contractors mark up site drawings in DWG, and shop-drawing fabricators reference DWG for steel and rebar schedules.
Converting DWG to HEIC turns a drawing into a snapshot for the devices that actually travel to site: iPads and iPhones. Field superintendents flip through plan images in the Photos app without any CAD viewer installed, and a set of 300 DPI sheet renders synced through iCloud gives the whole crew offline access. Because plan sheets are monochrome lineart, HEVC compresses them brutally well - a full floor plan typically lands at 400KB-1MB as HEIC, roughly half the JPG equivalent, so an entire drawing set fits in a text thread's worth of storage.
The conversion needs an AutoCAD-compatible parser because DWG is binary and version-specific - the Open Design Alliance (ODA) libraries power most third-party converters including ours. Common pitfalls: external references (XREFs) not resolved at conversion time appear as missing-link placeholders, and SHX font substitution can shift callouts and dimensions. Also keep the paperwork trail in mind: permit portals, RFI systems, and Bluebeam-based markup workflows expect PDF or JPG - render HEIC for the field crew's photo libraries and derive JPG via HEIC to JPG for formal submissions.
Where HEIC comes from
DWG (Drawing) is the proprietary native file format of AutoCAD, first released by Autodesk in 1982 with AutoCAD 1.0. The format has evolved through more than two dozen versions, each tied to a specific AutoCAD release (R12, 2000, 2004, 2010, 2018, 2024). Autodesk has never published an open specification, though the Open Design Alliance has reverse-engineered it into the Teigha library used by BricsCAD, LibreCAD, and most third-party CAD viewers. DWG dominates global architectural and mechanical-engineering practice, but clients and contractors carry iPhones, not CAD viewers — a HEIC render drops straight into Messages and Photos at a fraction of the size of an equivalent JPG.
DWG vs HEIC at a glance
| DWG | HEIC | |
|---|---|---|
| Compression | Proprietary binary CAD (vector + 3D model) | HEVC intra-frame raster |
| Scalability | Infinite, precision-engineering accurate | Fixed pixel grid |
| Typical file size | 500 KB - 50 MB | 150 KB - 1 MB at chosen DPI |
| Best for | Architectural plans, mechanical drawings, AutoCAD source files | iPhone/iPad client previews, Messages |
| Software support | AutoCAD, BricsCAD, LibreCAD, Autodesk Viewer | Apple native; codec needed on Windows |
Real-world workflow — Architect texts a floor plan to a client's iPhone
- Open the floor-plan.dwg in AutoCAD 2024 to confirm the latest revision is saved.
- Drop the DWG into the DWG to HEIC converter; select 'paper space' layout 1 (the titled plan).
- Render at 300 DPI A3 size to keep dimensions and notes legible, quality 92.
- Pick a white background and confirm line weights translate cleanly without antialiased blur.
- Text the resulting 700 KB HEIC to the client — Messages and Photos on iPhone render it natively.

When to convert DWG to HEIC
Converting DWG to HEIC renders each page or slide as a fixed image - The layout, fonts, tables, and graphics captured exactly as they appear, in a format roughly half the size of the equivalent JPG render. The result is a read-only visual snapshot that cannot be edited, reflowed, or accidentally modified by the recipient's software.
This suits Apple-device reference workflows: page images of contracts, reports, slides, and drawings stored as HEIC open instantly in Quick Look, Photos, and Files on Mac, iPhone, and iPad, and occupy minimal iCloud space even for long documents. No office software or DWG viewer is needed at any point after conversion.
Because HEIC support is thin outside the Apple ecosystem, use this conversion when the images are for your own devices or an Apple-based team. When page snapshots need to travel to unknown recipients, Windows systems, or web uploads, converting the document to JPG produces the universally compatible equivalent.
DWG to HEIC tips
- Bind all XREFs before conversion (BIND command in AutoCAD) - external references show as broken-link boxes if unresolved at render time.
- Set a paper-space layout with viewport scale before converting - model-space exports can come out at unpredictable extents.
- Use 300 DPI - thin dimension lines need it, and monochrome lineart compresses so well in HEIC that the size penalty is negligible.
- If your DWG uses SHX fonts (older AutoCAD shape fonts), the conversion may substitute - convert text to MText with TrueType first or expect minor glyph shifts.
- For multi-sheet DWGs (multiple layouts), our converter renders each layout as a separate HEIC and zips the output.
